Smoky Margarita

The craft cocktail world is fairly new, relatively speaking, to Mexico City. Where you once couldn't get a proper margarita here, you now see many variations of the drink. This version comes from David Mora, one of Mexico City's most innovative bartenders, whom you'll find at the new Puebla 109. The drink is usually strained into a decanter filled with eucalyptus smoke before it's poured into a glass, but using a smoky mezcal will also do the trick if you don't have a smoke gun at home.

MAKES 1 COCKTAIL

  • 1½ oz. mezcal
  • 1¼ oz. passion fruit juice
  • 1 oz. simple syrup
  • ¼ oz. fresh lime juice
  • Lemon slice, to garnish

Stir mezcal, passion fruit juice, simple syrup, and lime juice in an ice-filled shaker; strain into an ice-filled tumbler. Garnish with a lemon slice.
