Infused with ginger and black pepper, this syrup makes a great homemade ginger beer: Just mix one part syrup to three parts soda water. Ingredients
- 1 (6") piece of ginger
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 1⁄2 tsp. whole black peppercorns

Step 1
Peel and thinly slice ginger; transfer to a 2-qt. saucepan. Add sugar, water, and peppercorns; boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer until sugar is dissolved. Chill overnight, then strain into an 8-oz. glass jar.
