Audio Slideshow: Landon Nordeman’s BBQ Nation

SAVEUR strives to go beyond the obvious with its photography and we asked contributing photographer Landon Nordeman to do just that for our barbecue issue. Here is what he saw. We are proud to share it with you. — Larry Nighswander, SAVEUR Photography Director

Landon Nordeman, SAVEUR contributing photographer, visited barbecue temples in four different states to illustrate John T. Edge's story "BBQ Nation" in SAVEUR's June/July 2011 Barbecue Issue. He set up a white seamless background and photographed the proprietors, employees, and customers at each place. In this audio slideshow, he discusses 47 of the portraits he took.

"Every assignment I do for SAVEUR is exciting and unique, but my experience photographing 'BBQ Nation' exceeded all my expectations," says Nordeman. "SAVEUR readers are accustomed to seeing people in their kitchens. This time I wanted to eliminate the context and get to the heart of the culture of barbecue: the people who make it and the people who eat it."
